DESCRIPTIVE STATEMENT OF POSITION:	English learners in Massachusetts attend schools in which all educators share responsibility for their success, engage effectively with their families, and value and nurture their linguistic and cultural assets. English learners are taught by effective, well-prepared, and culturally responsive educators who hold them to high standards and have the resources and professional learning they need to advance students’ academic and linguistic development simultaneously. All teachers including general education and ESL teachers communicate and collaborate regularly to provide effective Tier 1 instruction for ELs. English learners have equitable access to meaningful and rigorous learning opportunities that build on their cultural and linguistic assets and the academic, linguistic, social, and emotional support they need to excel (MA DESE Blueprint for English Learner Success).
QUALIFICATIONS:	Massachusetts Elementary Teacher Certification and Massachusetts EL/ESL Certification Required Experience working with English as a Second Language students in a school setting Familiarity with MA DESE Blueprint for English Learner Success Working knowledge of one other language, or experience in learning a foreign language (Spanish or Portuguese language abilities preferred) Demonstrate organizational skills and excellent written and oral communication skills Ability to promote, establish, and maintain constructive working relationships with diverse students and their caregivers Ability to collaborate with staff, administrators, and others to establish a culturally responsive school environment Must be resilient and reliable and value an asset-based teaching approach, high standards for all learners within a supportive and caring learning environment
SALARY:	Per Prevailing Teacher’s Contract

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES FOR ELL TEACHER:
1. Has current knowledge of federal, state, and city guidelines of ELL protocols and is able to keep organized systems of documentation to meet compliance
2. Conduct assessment of the English proficiency of pupils whose native language is other than English; helps to identify pupils eligible for services designed to improve English language proficiency
3. Plan, develop, and implement ESL instruction and Massachusetts English Language Proficiency Standards (WIDA)
4. Adapt curriculum to provide individual, and small group instruction to meet the needs of
English Language Learners
5. Demonstrate cultural proficiency and use of effective and culturally relevant instructional practices
6. Provide a nurturing and supportive learning environment that encourages student responsibility and incorporates a variety of instructional techniques and strategies to meet different aptitudes and interests of students
7. Utilize effective techniques of classroom management, behavioral interventions, and communication to engage students
8. Manage allotted learning time to maximize student achievement
9. Maintain complete and accurate records of student progress and evidence of growth and progress
10. Identify support services needs of ELs and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and resolving barriers to learning
11. Collaborate and communicate with the EL students' content teacher(s) to align instruction
12. Support EL students' English language acquisition and classroom instructional needs (instructions, academic vocabulary, reading, writing support, and clarification of assignments)
13. Oversee and conduct Massachusetts state test (ACCESS) and administer screening tests for initial identification of EL students
14. Prepare for and assist with organization of EL student's reclassification meetings for
monitoring and for those ready to transition out of ELL services
15. Evaluate the language needs of students’ families who speak a language other than English at home and recommend appropriate language support
16. Translate between families, students, and school personnel regarding student academic needs
17. Act as a liaison between home and school to enhance family engagement
18. Work to establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents concerning the academic and behavioral progress of all assigned students
19. Collaborate with ELL Services Coordinator (K-12-stipend position), EL HS Dept. Head (stipend position), district-wide EL teachers, caregivers, and community partners to determine supports and meeting agenda for ELPAC meetings
20. Organizes a plan to increase family engagement in areas of interest and need for families such as, but not limited to: participation on school councils, understanding grading systems, policies, effective parent-teacher conferences, discipline, college and career readiness, absenteeism, curriculum, effective advocacy; collects, maintains, and reports data on effectiveness at school and building level
